How Presidential Campaign Homepages Ask for Donations: 07/17/2019 Edition

July 15 was the last day for Presidential campaigns to file second-quarter fundraising reports with the Federal Election Commission. The fundraising leaders among the Democratic candidates were:

  • Former Vice President Joe Biden: $21.5 million
  • Mayor Pete Buttigieg: $24.8 million
  • Senator Kamala Harris: $12 million
  • Senator Bernie Sanders: $18 million
  • Senator Elizabeth Warren: $19.1 million

Former Governor Bill Weld, who is seeking the Republican nomination, raised $700,000. President Donald J. Trump raised $26.5 million.

Methodology

A cut-off of only looking at candidates who raised more than $10 million dollars in Q2 was made for this analysis.

On July 16 - 17, the homepages and donation pages of the top Q2 fundraising candidates were visited using a desktop computer. The browser's cache was repeatedly cleared while reviewing the six Presidential candidate campaign websites. Since candidates may have multiple donation pages, only the donation pages linked to from a candidate's campaign website homepage is included here. At some point during the analysis period, the donation page used by President Donald J. Trump's re-election campaign site changed. Snapshots of both versions are included below.

Observations

  • In most cases, a "Donate" link or button appears in the top level navigation on the far right and typically differs from the other navigation items in some way. An exception is President Donald J. Trump's campaign site where the word "Contribute" is used.
  • The campaign sites for Senator Bernie Sanders and President Donald J. Trump do not include a donation link or block near the bottom of the page. Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Senator Kamala Harris both have donation blocks near the bottom of their homepages, while former Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Elizabeth Warren both have a bar that stays visible as a site visitor scrolls down the page.
  • Candidates seeking the Democratic nomination are using ActBlue to handle donation processing. When a donation is made using ActBlue, a website visitor is transferred from the candidate's site to ActBlue.
  • President Donald J. Trump's campaign site is now transferring donors to WinRed, a fundraising platform for Republican candidates and causes intended to compete with ActBlue. The President previously tweeted support for WinRed.
  • Donation pages include language where donors acknowledge using his / her own funds, being over age 18, etc. in accordance with election laws. Several candidates added additional language about who / entities they would not accept donations from at this time.
  • Joe Biden's Campaign Donation Page: "The campaign does not accept contributions from corporations or their PACs, unions, federal government contractors, national banks, those registered as federal lobbyists or under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, SEC-named executives of fossil fuel companies (i.e., companies whose primary business is the extraction, processing, distribution or sale of oil, gas or coal); or foreign nationals. "
  • Pete Buttigieg's Campaign Donation Page: "I am not an executive of a fossil fuel company."
  • Kamala Harris' Campaign Donation Page: "We're not taking a dime from corporate PACs, so your donation is critical to our success." and "Kamala Harris For The People is not accepting contributions from corporate, business, law firm or trade association PACs; federally registered lobbyists; or foreign agents."
  • Bernie Sanders' Campaign Donation Page: No special language displayed b
  • Elizabeth Warren's Campaign Donation Page: "I am not an executive of a fossil fuel company." and "Warren for President does not accept contributions from PACs of any kind or federally registered lobbyists."
  • Minimum suggested donation amounts by candidate are:
  • Joe Biden's Campaign Donation Page: $5
  • Pete Buttigieg's Campaign Donation Page: $3
  • Kamala Harris' Campaign Donation Page: $10
  • Bernie Sanders'Campaign Donation Page: $3
  • Donald J. Trump's Campaign Donation Page: $25

  • Bernie Sanders' Campaign Donation Page: $1,000
  • Donald J. Trump's Campaign Donation Page: $2,800

  • Pete Buttigieg
  • Elizabeth Warren
  • Campaigns offering a way to donate by mail:

  • NOTE: Donald J. Trump's donation page on the 16th included instructions on how to mail donations, but that language was not present on the 17th.
  • Campaigns are including reference codes in links for data analytics purposes.
  • In most examples, a "Donate" link or button appears in the upper right hand corner of the top level navigation and typically differs from the other navigation items in some way to draw attention to it. An exception is Donald J. Trump's campaign site where there button is labeled "Contribute."
